All of the major search engines use the amount of links to your site as an indicator as to how popular your website or webpage is. The more links (votes) to your site, the more popular it is in the eyes of the search engines.
Google, the inventors and creators of "PageRank" have included an indicator in their Google toolbar that can be used as an indicator about a webpage's popularity. They have an advanced formula that for years has been the subject of debate, and had many people try to work out the exact method that they use to calculate a PageRank value for a particular webpage.

The Google bots are constantly crawling the internet, and constantly updating each webpage's PageRank, however - Google only updates the PageRank Toolbar roughly every 3 - 4 months, and no-one except Google knows when the next update will occur.
Below is a table that shows the approximate values needed to obtain a particular PageRank.
How to read the PageRank table : In order to obtain a PR 3 for your webpage, you would need 555 links from other PageRank 1 webpages, or 101 links from PageRank 2 webpages, 18.5 links from PageRank 3 or 1 link from a PageRank 5 website.
